Today, Heather’s father showed up at the ship and will be with her for the rest of South Africa. They fly to another city tomorrow, so the three of us spent the day in Cape Town. When you get off the ship, it is so gorgeous. You can see Table Mountain, and the harbor is connected to a wharf outdoor shopping mall.
The first thing that we did today was go to an aquarium to do some work for our Marine Biology Class. I was looking at whether the size of a fish determined if they spend more time in hiding or swimming in the open. It took a while for Heather and I to look around and get our separate projects done, but the aquarium was nice. Heather even got to see her favorite animal – the sea turtle! We got fish and chips at the aquarium, because it was convenient. The whole aquarium is very eco-friendly. They don’t turn on the air conditioning as high, their tables are covered in environmental facts, and they even tell you what kinds of fish to eat. The States have a similar program called “Seafood Watch.”
After this we walked around trying to find something to do. The cable cars up to Table Mountain were closed because of high wind so instead we got a driver to take us up to Signal Hill. From the top you can see the whole city of Cape Town all around you. It was magnificent.
Back down at the wharf we went shopping, and I found this very cool store. It is full of all these hand crafted knickknacks, and I can’t wait to go back! There goes my South Africa budget. We also got to see a couple of street performing groups. One group was very good; they had marimbas, a saxophonist, and a singer. When I have decent internet, I can upload the video I got of the performance. We got some frozen yogurt for desert, and then returned to the ship. Also randomly, there is a large crane thing by the ship with the label Gottwald on it. I had to get a picture!
